Blue skies

Blue skies

Blue skies smiling at me,
Nothing but blue skies do I see.
Bluebirds singing a song,
Nothing but bluebirds all day long.

Never saw the sun shining so bright,
Never saw things going so right,
Noticing the days hurrying by,
When you’re in love, my how they fly.

Blue days, all of them gone,
Nothing but blue skies from now on.

Irving Berlin wrote this song in 1926 for ‘Betsy,’ a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical that closed after thirty-nine performances. The song, however, was an instant hit. The story is that the song was so instantly popular that the singer. Belle Baker,  was recalled for twenty-four encores on the opening night.

It was one of the first songs to be sung in a ‘talkie,’ when Al Jolson sang it in ‘The Jazz Singer’ in 1927.

It is a song associated with Ella Fitzgerald, but has been performed by many others, including Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye in ‘White Christmas.’

  11. Berlin was spot on! Most countries go into a national depression in winter when the skies are covered in grey clouds and the rain is continuous. But come summer, the blue skies call people outside their houses, sparking a good mood and an interest in the human race.

  19. It is such a nice song. Who do I associate it with? I think a male voice, maybe Bing or Danny. I think I should listen to Ella's recording.
